Your puppy’s needs
- at least two bowls – one for water and the other for food, preferably made of porcelain
- leash and collar (harnesses) – at the beginning, the best adjustable harness for a baby is best bought directly at a pet store, it will prevent the wrong choice.
- bed – the puppy needs its own place where it can calm down
- pee pad – it is possible to use disposable pads that can be purchased at the pharmacy, there are also reusable mats that can be washed
- food, treats, rumen – at first, always choose what the breeder feeds, over time, you can switch the puppy to another food of your own choice, but it should be done gradually so as not to cause diarrhoea. Treats are not food, so in moderation – treat them as a reward. Buffalo leather is a good solution for chewing when changing teeth, so that the puppy does not start biting something we do not want.
- Toys – buy toys directly from the pet store, this will prevent you from making the wrong choice. The common toy is not intended for dogs, and a puppy could swallow, for example, the plastic eye in a stuffed animal and thus injure himself. Equally inappropriate are some toy fillers that are intended for children, not dogs. For example, the balls that “sit stuffed animals” are very dangerous for a puppy when ingested!
- Carrier – during the journey, no matter how long the journey, a transporter is always necessary for the safety of the puppy.
Puppy at home
- Your puppy must always have access to clean water. The water must be changed daily, and the bowl thoroughly washed to prevent bacteria from sticking to it.
- The puppy must receive food in the right amount and at regular times of the day (for dosage see the label on the package in the table – age / weight of the puppy), divide this dose into three parts – morning, midday, and evening dose.
- Your puppy needs to be walked frequently after waking up, after playing and after eating!
- Always praise the puppy for a properly performed need – give a treat to praise. When I pee in the wrong place, ignore it. Reward him if he goes where he should.
- The puppy can go for a walk where unfamiliar dogs are moving, not earlier than one week after the second vaccination, when the vaccine is effective. Until then, the puppy has no immunity and can easily get infected from other animals, or by licking bacteria that are invisible to us.
- Do not keep your puppy isolated, human contact is necessary. If you have small children, explain that they must be careful not to hurt the puppy.
- Never act under stress when training your dog! Your puppy is aware of your feelings.
- Bathe your little puppy only, when necessary, use a special puppy shampoo. After washing, dry your puppy immediately so that it does not catch a cold. Be careful not to let water and shampoo get into his ears. For an adult dog, when it has a longer coat, I recommend using conditioners. The coat is then not so broken and easier to comb, it remains shiny and smooth.
- When you take your puppy home, it’s a new place for him – new people don’t force him to do anything let him explore the surroundings on his own. Show him his sleeping place, he should have a pee mat next to the bed, a bowl of water and food nearby. Let him rest. The first day at home should be calm so that he can get used to his new environment without stress. The first night can be a bit more difficult. The puppy is used to sleeping with his siblings, suddenly he is alone. It’s good to take something from the breeder, a teddy bear or a blanket that smells like siblings and mums. You will probably hear crying, if you ignore it and work through it, the next night the crying will lessen or stop altogether.
Food
Food is very important. Everyone has their own personal task about feeding their charges, some prefer dry food, others wet food, and still others prefer to prepare their own food by cooking at home. It is necessary to weigh all the pros and cons. The time it takes to prepare, the price, and most importantly, the health impact on the puppy.
- dry food: there is a huge variety of dry food on the market today. In any case, I do not recommend feeding your puppy food that is available in supermarkets. Before choosing a food, find out what its content is.
- cooking yourself: This way of preparing food is also good for your dog. But only if you plan well and calculate the ratio of vitamins, minerals, etc. that the dog consumes, which is not easy.
- Wet food: We do not recommend supermarket cans. You can buy high-quality canned food with a high meat content at the pet store.
